FAQ

Is it possible to work as an automotive mechanic?

It is possible. Many garages have vacancies that are advertised online. Many people apply because they think it will be fun. To get your foot in front of the door, try applying for a few positions to see if any accept student applications. If you don't know anyone working in the industry, ask your friends and relatives. You might be able to refer someone.

How do I prepare for a mechanic apprenticeship?

It is essential to understand what you are getting into. You should be familiar with the mechanics of cars, and how they work. This way, you know where to start when you go on your first day at the garage.

You will also need to learn how to fix simple problems like tires and broken lights.

You will be able to diagnose and repair problems yourself.

You'll also need to know how different parts fit together to put them back together again.

Finally, be proficient in using tools safely and efficiently.

All of these factors will allow you to become a skilled mechanic.

Is it important which college I go?

It's not true. There is no difference in the programs offered by colleges for getting into automotive work. Some schools have better programs than others, so you might want to look elsewhere if your goal is something more specialized.

What kind of car mechanic jobs exists?

Car mechanics can find work in three areas:

  • Automotive repair shops
  • Dealerships
  • Independent garages

Automotive repair shops

It's where most people start to think about becoming a mechanic. It's actually the easiest way to start. You can either work in a shop run by someone else, or start your business.

If you decide to work at a shop, you'll need to apply to join a union. After you are accepted to the union, you will receive training from it.

After the training, you will be ready to go and start your job.

Registering with the government is required if you intend to open a garage. You'll need to meet certain standards after you register.

Once you register, you'll receive a license that allows you to operate your garage.

Your license allows you to sell spare parts and make minor repairs. It won't permit you to fix serious engine problems.

Apart from selling spare parts, customers will also expect you to provide guidance and advice.

Dealership jobs

Most dealerships employ mechanics who specialize in one area of the car. For example, they might only deal with brakes or only replace tires.

Some dealers also have general mechanics that can handle all aspects.

These positions may require applicants to complete specific training before being allowed on the job. This allows employers to select the most qualified candidates for their roles.

Some dealerships will hire graduates straight from college. These graduates already have a basic understanding of mechanical engineering, so they are able to learn all about cars.

Independent garages

Independent garages don't belong to any particular dealership. They are more focused on providing top-quality service.

Independent garages have the ability to afford higher wages, as they aren’t associated with any one company. This makes them generally more well-paid than jobs at dealerships.

However, independent garages do not necessarily offer better workplaces. Many owners prefer to control their businesses themselves, rather than delegating it to employees.

This could lead to you working long hours with little control over your day.

It is also possible to expect lower wages than you would if working at a dealer.

There are many jobs that can be switched between. If you want to work at a dealership, then you simply need to ask your current employer if he would consider hiring you as a mechanic instead.

Alternativly, you can apply directly to the garage owner if you are interested in working at an independent garage.

The bad news? Finding a new position isn't always easy. There are plenty of other factors that influence how much you earn.

You might also consider the vehicle type you repair, and whether extra labor is charged.

Is a career in automotive mechanic promising?

The automotive industry is full of exciting opportunities for those who are dedicated to excellence. This field requires hard work and the willingness to learn from others.

Your job will require you to be a good communicator as you'll be talking to customers and other employees. It's important to be flexible and willing to travel. This will make commutes difficult.

If you are interested in a career working in automotive, then consider attending classes at community colleges. Many schools have programs that are specifically tailored for students who are interested in automotive sales, repair, and customer service.

You should choose to study mechanical engineering if you want to get a degree. You can earn a bachelor's in as little four years.

Many employers will also hire graduates straight from school. You should start looking for employment as soon as you are able to continue your studies part-time.

After you complete your education, you may need to undergo some type of training before you can become an automotive technician.

You will need to pass the Automotive Service Excellence certification exam. This test covers engine maintenance and brakes as well as suspension.

Once you have passed the ASE Test, you are eligible to apply for a National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence License.

A license allows you to perform repairs on vehicles owned by private individuals. You'll be paid based upon the number of services provided.

Not all states require licensing. A license is required if you plan on working outside of your home state.

Some states don't issue licenses until after completing a certain amount of training. If you are one of these people, you might need to look for another alternative.

What is the length of an apprenticeship as an automotive mechanic?

The apprenticeship to become an automotive mechanic takes about three years. It includes two years of school and two years as an apprentice. The first year is spent learning all aspects of the trade, including theory, practical skills, and safety procedures. This year, you will also learn how to safely and efficiently use tools. After you have completed the first year of training, you will be able to spend an additional year on-the job learning different trades. You'll have the opportunity to attend formal courses during these periods too.

The last year of the program is dedicated to gaining certification and qualifications in the field. These include NVQs (National Vocational Qualifications), which are awarded after passing exams covering specific topics within the industry. There are also HNCs (Higher National Certificates), which cover general subjects like management, business administration, customer service, and more. City & Guilds certificates can be obtained for individuals who want to learn certain trades.

How to Become an Auto Technician

An automotive technician performs repairs and maintains vehicles. He/she is employed at automobile dealerships, garages, service centres, and auto shops. He/she assists customers in fixing their cars, trucks or motorcycles. An automotive technician must have the ability to quickly diagnose and fix problems.

An associate degree should be obtained from a vocational school if you wish to work as an auto technician. After completing the program, he/she must take the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence certification exam. ASE stands for American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The ASE certification test consists of two sections. One section tests mechanical knowledge; the second section tests practical skills. You will need to attend an authorized testing site in order to pass the test. These locations can be found online or at your local auto dealer.

Before becoming an automotive technician, a candidate must pass the test. This process can vary depending on where the applicant lives. Some states require candidates to complete a training program, while others let them study on their own. Some states issue licenses to technicians as soon as they get their license. Others wait until they have worked at least six months as an automotive technician.

To become an automotive technician, one must apply at a local dealership. Once hired, most new employees start out working as apprentices. Apprenticeship programs typically last three to four years. The apprenticeship program teaches students how to change oil, adjust brakes, replace tires, clean spark plugs, inspect engine compartments, and perform routine maintenance. Some students will learn advanced repair techniques, such as changing shocks, installing air filters, and replacing engines. Classes are offered by most schools during regular business hours. Some schools offer evening classes, however.

After completing an apprenticeship, a student becomes a journeyman. Journeymen can spend up to five years learning how major systems work, including transmissions, differentials. They also learn how to adjust steering gear and suspensions. They are also taught how to troubleshoot electrical components and remanufacture engines. Because they have the experience and knowledge to do the job right, employers love hiring journeymen.

If a candidate successfully passes the required exams and receives a license, he/she might want to consider starting his/her own shop. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, nearly 1.7 million automotive mechanic jobs were available in 2010. This number is expected to increase by 18% between 2009 and 2020. When a candidate plans to open his/her own shop he/she should be ready to invest thousands of dollars in equipment.

Many factors affect the automotive technician's salary, including location, education, experience, and employer type. On average, an unemployed person could earn $20,000 annually. Someone with only a high school diploma could earn around $21,000 per year. Those with an associate's degree earned approximately $24,000 per year. A technician with a bachelor's degree earned approximately $27,000 annually. The average annual salary for those with master's degrees was $32,000. Salaries are increasing so that a professional earning less than $30,000 could expect to make $40,000 in a few years.
