FAQ

Is it difficult to find a job as a mechanic in the automotive industry?

It can be done. Many garages have vacancies that are advertised online. Many people apply because they think it will be fun. Try applying to a few jobs and seeing if the garages accept student applications. If you don't know anyone working in the industry, ask your friends and relatives. They might be happy to recommend someone.

What is the job description for a mechanic in a car?

There are three main areas of employment for car mechanics:

  • Automotive repair shops
  • Dealerships
  • Independent garages

Automotive repair shops

Most people think of this as the first step to becoming a mechanic. It's the easiest way for most people to get started. You can either work in a shop run by someone else, or start your business.

If you decide to work at a shop, you'll need to apply to join a union. After you are accepted to the union, you will receive training from it.

After completing the training, you'll be ready to start work.

Registering with the government is required if you intend to open a garage. After you register, you will be required to meet specific standards.

When you've registered, you'll be given a license to operate your garage.

You can sell spare parts or do minor repairs with your license. It won't permit you to fix serious engine problems.

As well as selling spare parts you will need to offer advice and direction to customers.

Dealership jobs

Most dealerships only employ mechanics who have a specific skill set. They may be trained to replace or repair tires, or they may specialize in brakes.

However, some dealerships also hire general mechanics who can handle all aspects of car repairs.

Many of these positions require that applicants undergo training before they are allowed to work. Employers are able to choose which candidates will best suit their position.

Some dealerships recruit students right out of school. These graduates are familiar with the fundamentals of mechanical engineering so they can easily learn about cars.

Independent garages

Independent garages don’t have to be associated with any particular dealer. They tend to be focused on high-quality service.

Independent garages have the ability to afford higher wages, as they aren’t associated with any one company. This makes them generally more well-paid than jobs at dealerships.

However, independent garages may not be better places to work. Many owners prefer to run their businesses themselves rather than delegate responsibility to employees.

So you may find yourself working long hours without having any say over what happens during the day.

It is also possible to expect lower wages than you would if working at a dealer.

The good news is that you can easily switch between different kinds of jobs. To work at a dealership you will need to contact your employer to see if he is open to the idea of hiring you.

Or, if your dream is to work for an independent garage you can contact the owner directly.

The bad news is that finding a new job isn't always easy. There are many factors that affect how much you make.

For example, the type of vehicle you repair and whether you charge extra for labor.

What length of an automotive course is it?

A course in automotive lasts three years.

The first year is spent learning about cars and theory. The second year is dedicated to practical training, where you will learn how to fix cars, drive them, and do other jobs around the car. The last year of your training is spent on practical training, where you learn how to fix real-world problems.

What does it matter which college I attend?

Non, really. There are no differences between colleges when it comes to getting into the automotive industry. But, there are better programs at some schools than others. Look elsewhere if you want something more niche.

Is it really worth becoming a mechanic.

The answer depends on what you are looking for in life. If money is your goal, then you can answer "yes". But if you are searching for meaning and purpose, then you should not answer this question.

If you don’t have any mechanical skills, it’s pointless to get into it. It will just waste your time. It will not make you rich. It won't make your name famous. You won't be famous.

You'd have to spend years learning how things work. It would be expensive to have your car fixed by someone else. Most people won't bother to do it. They find something better to do instead.

Summarising, if your goal is to make lots of money, go for it. But if you want to live a meaningful life, stay away from the mechanic's industry.

What do I need to know about car mechanics?

Auto mechanics don't require any knowledge. It's enough to know how to fix things. Most people begin by changing brake pads and tires, before moving on to more complicated repairs.

You'll need the ability to read and understand diagrams and to follow simple rules of good practise. You'll also need to be able to judge whether parts need replacing or repairing.

You should not attempt to fix vehicles without proper training and guidance. This is especially true if your job involves expensive parts like transmissions or engines.

Even though you won’t need to know much more about cars, you will still need to have an in-depth understanding of mechanics and physics. This includes understanding the mechanics of how engines and brakes work.

You should also be ready to handle all kinds of situations. You might be required to work on a vehicle that was involved in an accident. Also, you'll need to be familiar with dealing with accidents or breakdowns.

It is important to be open to learning new skills quickly. You will need to be able not only to diagnose problems but also to perform simple maintenance tasks like tightening bolts and nuts.

How To

How to become an automotive technician

An automotive technician performs repairs and maintains vehicles. He/she can be found at auto shops, garages and service centers. He/she assists customers in fixing their cars, trucks or motorcycles. An automotive technician must be capable of diagnosing problems and making repairs safely, accurately and efficiently.

An associate degree from a vocational school is required for anyone who wishes to become an automotive technician. After completing this program, he/she will need to pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence's (ASE) certification exam. ASE stands for American Society of Mechanical Engineers. There are two parts to the ASE certification exam. One section tests mechanical knowledge; the second section tests practical skills. You must attend one of the authorized testing sites to take the test. These locations are available online or through your local automotive dealer.

After passing the exam, a candidate must take a state exam before being licensed as an automobile technician. This process varies depending on where the applicant lives. For example, some states require candidates to attend a training course, while others allow them to study independently. Some states permit technicians to work immediately after they are granted their license. Others require them to wait at least six consecutive months before they can be licensed.

To become an automotive technician, one must apply at a local dealership. Most new employees work as apprentices after they have been hired. Apprenticeship programs last about three years. During this time, a student learns how to perform basic repairs, such as changing oil, adjusting brakes, replacing tires, cleaning spark plugs, inspecting engine compartments, and performing routine maintenance. Some students learn how to do advanced repairs, such as installing air filters, replacing shocks, repairing engines, and replacing transmission fluids. Most schools offer classes during regular business hours. Some schools offer evening classes, however.

Once a student finishes his/her apprenticeship, it is possible to become a Journeyman. Journeymen typically spend four to five years learning how to install major systems, such as transmissions, differentials, steering gear, suspensions, and drive shafts. They are also taught how to troubleshoot electrical components and remanufacture engines. Employers prefer to hire journeymen as they are familiar with the job and can anticipate customer needs.

A candidate who passes all the necessary exams and gets a license might be interested in opening his/her own business. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics (2010), almost 1.7million automotive mechanic jobs were on the market. This number is expected to increase by 18% between 2009 and 2020. A candidate who plans to open a shop should expect to spend many thousands of dollars on equipment and supplies.

Many factors affect the automotive technician's salary, including location, education, experience, and employer type. A jobless person could make an average of $20,000 annually. A person with only a high-school diploma could make around $21,000 annually. A bachelor's degree is equivalent to approximately $24,000 annually. Technicians with a bachelor's degree earn about $27,000 per annum. The average annual salary for those with master's degrees was $32,000. A common trend is for salary increases to occur so a professional making less than $30,000 can reasonably expect to be earning $40,000 or more within a few years.
