How To

How to Become an Auto Technician

A technician who works on vehicles is an automotive technician. He/she works at automotive shops, garages or service centers. Customers can rely on him/her to fix their cars, trucks and motorcycles. An automotive technician must be able to diagnose problems and make repairs quickly, safely, accurately, and efficiently.

A person who wants to work as an automotive technician should first obtain an associate degree from a vocational school. After completing this program the student must pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence exam (ASE). ASE stands as American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The ASE certification test consists of two sections. The first section tests your mechanical skills, while the second tests your practical knowledge. You must attend one of the authorized testing sites to take the test. These locations are available online or through your local automotive dealer.

After passing the test, a candidate must pass a state examination before becoming licensed as an automotive technician. This process can vary depending on where the applicant lives. Some states require applicants to take a training course while others allow them the freedom to study on their own. Some states allow technicians to become licensed right away after receiving their license. While others wait until they have had at least six years of experience as an automotive technician.

A person must apply to an auto dealership in order to get started as an automobile technician. Most new employees begin as apprentices once they are hired. Apprenticeship programs typically last three to four years. A student will learn to repair basic things like changing oil, adjusting brakes or replacing tires. They also learn how spark plugs are cleaned and inspect engine compartments. Advanced repairs can be done by some students, including replacing shocks, installing air filters and repairing engines. Most schools offer classes during regular business hours. Some schools also offer evening classes when needed.

After completing an apprenticeship, a student becomes a journeyman. Journeymen spend typically four to five years learning to install major systems such as transmissions and differentials, steering gear, suspensions and drive shafts. You will also learn how to repair complicated electrical components, as well as how to remanufacture engines and rebuild transmissions. Employers prefer to hire journeymen as they are familiar with the job and can anticipate customer needs.

If a candidate successfully passes the required exams and receives a license, he/she might want to consider starting his/her own shop. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2010, nearly 1.7 Million automotive mechanic jobs were available. This figure is expected to rise 18 percent between 2009-2020. A candidate who plans to open a shop should expect to spend many thousands of dollars on equipment and supplies.

Technicians with bachelor's degrees earn approximately $27,000 per year. The average annual salary for those with master's degrees was $32,000. Salary increases can be common.
