FAQ

What are the different types of jobs available in car mechanic?

Three main areas of employment are available for car mechanics:

  • Automotive repair shops
  • Dealerships
  • Independent garages

Automotive repair shops

This is where most people first think of becoming a mechanic. It's also the easiest way you can get started. Either you can work in a shop that is owned by another person or start your own business.

If you are interested in working at a shop you will need to apply for membership to a union. Once you're accepted into the union, you'll receive training from the union.

Once you complete the training, it's time to get started.

You will need to register if your garage is going to be open. You'll need to meet certain standards after you register.

You will receive a license to run your garage once you have registered.

Your license will permit you to sell spares parts and perform minor repairs. It won't permit you to fix serious engine problems.

As well as selling spare parts you will need to offer advice and direction to customers.

Dealership jobs

Most dealerships only employ mechanics who have a specific skill set. They might be able to only fix brakes or replace tires.

Some dealerships have the option to hire general mechanics who can take care of all aspects.

Many of these positions require that applicants undergo training before they are allowed to work. Employers can then choose the best candidates for their job.

Some dealerships will hire graduates straight from college. These graduates already know the basics of mechanical engineering and therefore have no problem learning about cars.

Independent garages

Independent garages don't belong to any particular dealership. They tend to be focused on high-quality service.

Independent garages don't have to be associated with any particular company. This allows them to offer higher wages. This makes them generally more well-paid than jobs at dealerships.

Independent garages don't necessarily make for better work environments. Many business owners prefer to manage their own businesses rather than delegating responsibility to others.

This could lead to you working long hours with little control over your day.

Also, expect to make lower wages than if your job was at a dealership.

The good news? You can easily switch between different types of jobs. To work at a dealership you will need to contact your employer to see if he is open to the idea of hiring you.

If you prefer to work in an independent garage, you might consider applying directly to its owner.

The bad news is that finding a new job isn't always easy. Many other factors can also influence the amount you earn.

This could include the type of vehicle that you are working on and whether or not you charge an additional for labor.

How long is an automotive mechanic apprenticeship

It takes approximately three years to complete an automotive mechanic apprenticeship. The apprenticeship includes two years studying at school and two more as an apprentice. The first year of training is spent in the trade. This includes theory and practical skills as well as safety procedures. You'll also learn how tools can be used safely and efficiently during this year. You'll spend the second year in on-the-job training, where you will gain experience in various trades. You'll have the opportunity to attend formal courses during these periods too.

The last year of the program is dedicated to gaining certification and qualifications in the field. These include NVQs. They are awarded after passing exams on specific topics within the industry. In addition, there are HNCs (Higher National Certificates) that cover general subjects such as management, business administration, and customer service. Finally, there are City & Guilds certificates that are offered for those who wish to become qualified in certain trades.

What information do I need about car mechanics

Auto mechanics don't require any knowledge. The only thing you need is the ability to fix them. Most people begin by changing brake pads and tires, before moving on to more complicated repairs.

You need to be able read and comprehend diagrams, follow written instructions and adhere to basic principles of good practice. It is also important to know how to determine if parts are damaged or need to be replaced.

It's important to remember that you shouldn't attempt to repair vehicles without having received proper training and guidance. This is especially important if you work with expensive parts such as transmissions or engines.

Even though you don't need to be an expert on cars, it is important to understand the fundamentals of mechanical engineering and physical physics. This means understanding the principles behind how engines work and how brakes function.

Noting that all situations are possible, it is important to be prepared. For instance, you might find yourself in charge of a vehicle that has been in a serious accident. You will also need to be able to deal with accidents and breakdowns.

You should also be open to learning quickly. You will need to be able not only to diagnose problems but also to perform simple maintenance tasks like tightening bolts and nuts.
