Does it matter where I go to college?

You're wrong. There is no difference between colleges in terms of how to get into the automobile industry. Some schools have better programs than others, so you might want to look elsewhere if your goal is something more specialized.

What is the best career for an automotive mechanic?

Automotive is an exciting industry filled with opportunities for people who are committed to excellence. This field requires hard work and the willingness to learn from others.

Because you will be spending most of your time communicating with customers and employees, you will need excellent communication skills. You must also be willing and able to travel long distances, which can make it difficult to commute.

If you're interested in pursuing a career in automotive, consider taking classes at community colleges and universities. Many schools offer programs specifically designed for students interested in auto repair, sales, or customer service.

You should choose to study mechanical engineering if you want to get a degree. It's possible to get a bachelor's degree in just four years.

Many employers will also hire graduates straight from school. So, it is wise to begin searching for employment while you are still able to study part time.

After you've finished your education, it's likely that you'll need to go through some training before you can be hired as an auto technician.

What jobs are available for car mechanics?

There are three main areas of employment for car mechanics:

  • Automotive repair shops
  • Dealerships
  • Independent garages

Automotive repair shops

It's where most people start to think about becoming a mechanic. It's also the easiest way you can get started. You can either work at a shop owned by someone else or set up your own business.

If you plan to work in a shop, you must apply to join the union. Once you're accepted into the union, you'll receive training from the union.

You'll be ready for work once you have completed the training.

If you plan to open your own garage you will need to register with government. You'll need to meet certain standards after you register.

When you've registered, you'll be given a license to operate your garage.

Your license will permit you to sell spares parts and perform minor repairs. It won't allow you to fix major engine problems.

In addition to selling spare parts, you'll also be expected to offer advice and guidance to customers.

Dealership jobs

Most dealerships only employ mechanics who have a specific skill set. They might be able to only fix brakes or replace tires.

Some dealers also have general mechanics that can handle all aspects.

Some positions require that applicants complete training before they can be allowed to work. This means employers can choose which candidates are best suited for their role.

Some dealerships recruit students right out of school. These graduates have no difficulty learning about cars because they already know the basics and principles of mechanical engineering.

Independent garages

Independent garages don't belong to any particular dealership. They tend to be focused on high-quality service.

Independent garages don't have to be associated with any particular company. This allows them to offer higher wages. This makes them generally more well-paid than jobs at dealerships.

However, independent garages do not necessarily offer better workplaces. Many owners prefer to control their businesses themselves, rather than delegating it to employees.

It is possible to work long hours, but not have any control over the day.

Additionally, you should expect to earn lower wages if employed by a dealership.

The good news? You can easily switch between different types of jobs. It is possible to switch between different types of jobs if your current employer would prefer you to work at a dealer.

Alternatively, if you'd like to work at an independent garage, then you could try applying directly to the owner of the garage.

Finding a new job is not always easy. There are plenty of other factors that influence how much you earn.

It could be the type and cost of labor you use to repair your vehicle.

Although they may be similar, they are not identical. Both a mechanic and an automotive technician can repair cars.

How To

How to Become an Auto Technician

An automotive technician provides repair services and maintenance to vehicles. He/she works at automotive shops, garages or service centers. He/she helps customers fix their cars, trucks, motorcycles, ATVs, boats, lawn mowers, snowmobiles, tractors, trailers, farm equipment, planes, helicopters, jet skis, watercraft, bicycles, motorcycles, scooters, golf carts, etc. An automotive technician must know how to diagnose problems and perform repairs efficiently, safely, accurately, quickly, and correctly.

An associate degree from a vocational school is required for anyone who wishes to become an automotive technician. After completing the program, he/she must pass ASE certification. ASE stands in for American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Two sections make up the ASE certification examination. One section tests knowledge of mechanical components, while the other section tests skills in practical areas. To take the test, you must visit one of the approved testing locations. These testing sites can be found online and through your local dealer.

A candidate must pass the state exam after passing the test to become an automotive technician. This process is different depending on where you live. Some states require applicants to take a training course while others allow them the freedom to study on their own. Some states permit technicians to work immediately after they are granted their license. Others require them to wait at least six consecutive months before they can be licensed.

Apply to your local dealership to become an automotive technician. Most employees who are hired start as apprentices. Apprenticeships last for three years. A student will learn to repair basic things like changing oil, adjusting brakes or replacing tires. They also learn how spark plugs are cleaned and inspect engine compartments. Advanced repairs can be done by some students, including replacing shocks, installing air filters and repairing engines. Schools offer classes during business hours. Some schools offer evening classes, however.

When a student has completed his/her apprenticeship, they become a journeyman. Journeymen generally spend four- to five decades learning how to fix major systems like transmissions. They learn how to do complex repairs such as remanufacturing engines, rebuilding transmissives, and troubleshooting electronic components. Because they have the experience and knowledge to do the job right, employers love hiring journeymen.

Once a candidate passes the required exams and is granted a license, they might consider opening their own shop. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2010, nearly 1.7 Million automotive mechanic jobs were available. This figure is expected to rise 18 percent between 2009-2020. Candidates who decide to open their own business should be prepared to invest thousands in equipment and supplies.

Many factors affect the automotive technician's salary, including location, education, experience, and employer type. On average, an unemployed person could earn $20,000 annually. Someone who has only a highschool diploma could earn around 21,000 dollars per year. A bachelor's degree is equivalent to approximately $24,000 annually. Technicians with a bachelor’s degree made about $27,000 annually. A master's degree earns around $32,000 per a year. Salary increases can be common. A professional who earns less that $30,000 today could reasonably expect a $40,000 increase in the next few decades.
