FAQ

What should I know about car mechanics

To be an auto mechanic, you don't have to know much about cars. The only thing you need is the ability to fix them. That's why most people start doing jobs like fitting brake pads or changing tires before progressing to more complex repairs.

You'll need to know how to read diagrams, understand written instructions and follow basic rules of good practice. Also, you will need to know how to tell if parts require replacing or repair.

You should not attempt to fix vehicles without proper training and guidance. This is especially true if you deal with expensive components such as engines or transmissions.

In fact, even though you won't need to know much about cars, you will need to thoroughly know the basics of mechanical engineering and physics. This is how you understand the mechanisms behind engines and brakes.

You should also be ready to handle all kinds of situations. You might be required to work on a vehicle that was involved in an accident. Also, you'll need to be familiar with dealing with accidents or breakdowns.

Finally, you must be willing to learn new skills quickly. As well as being able to diagnose problems, you'll need to be able to perform simple maintenance tasks such as tightening nuts and bolts.

What qualifications do I need to become a mechanic?

A series of exams is necessary to become a mechanic. These exams include:

  • A general knowledge assessment
  • Practical exam
  • An apprenticeship test

These tests will ensure you are familiar with the fundamental concepts of mechanics and physics before starting to work as a mechanic.

After passing these tests, you will be eligible to become a mechanic. You will still need to complete an apprenticeship. This will require you to learn the trade.

To learn all there is to know about fixing vehicles, you will need workshops and classes. It will be necessary to work alongside experienced mechanics.

To be a successful mechanic, you will need to have a high degree of concentration and attention. Vehicle repairs require you to be very attentive.

You'll need patience and persistence to become a successful mechanic. If you don’t like following directions, then this career path may not suit you.

But if you love cars and enjoy fixing them, you could be very happy in this line of work.

What length is an automotive mechanic apprenticeship?

A three-year apprenticeship in automotive mechanics takes. The apprenticeship includes two years studying at school and two more as an apprentice. The first year is used to learn all aspects of the trade including safety procedures and theory. This year, you will also learn how to safely and efficiently use tools. You'll spend the second year in on-the-job training, where you will gain experience in various trades. You will have the opportunity for formal training during these years.

The final year of this program is spent in obtaining qualifications and becoming certified in your field. These include NVQs (National Vocational Qualifications), that are given after passing specific industry exams. You can also get HNCs (Higher National Certificates), that cover subjects such as customer service, business administration, management, and business administration. For those interested in pursuing certain trades, City & Guilds certificates are available.

Can I work as an auto mechanic without a degree? What about part-time study?

Although it's not mandatory, a degree can help. Employers prefer applicants who have completed a full-time degree. It shows that you've worked hard and are determined to succeed.

But, this doesn't mean you have to stop working while studying. Some universities permit students to do coursework during summer holidays and complete their studies later in a year. Others let students take classes part-time throughout the year.

How To

How to Become an Automotive Technician

An automotive technician is responsible for vehicle maintenance and repair. He/she works at automotive shops, garages or service centers. He/she helps customers fix their cars, trucks, motorcycles, ATVs, boats, lawn mowers, snowmobiles, tractors, trailers, farm equipment, planes, helicopters, jet skis, watercraft, bicycles, motorcycles, scooters, golf carts, etc. A technician in automotive must be able diagnose and repair problems quickly, safely, accurately, efficiently, and effectively.

If you want to be an automotive technician, you need an associate degree from vocational school. After completing this program, he/she will need to pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence's (ASE) certification exam. ASE stands in for American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The ASE certification test consists two sections. The first section tests for mechanical knowledge, the second for practical skills. You will need to attend an authorized testing site in order to pass the test. These testing sites can be found online and through your local dealer.

After passing the test, a candidate must pass an examination in order to be licensed as an automotive technician. This process varies depending on where the applicant lives. Some states require applicants to take a training course while others allow them the freedom to study on their own. Some states permit technicians to work immediately after they are granted their license. Others require them to wait at least six consecutive months before they can be licensed.

To get started as an automotive technician, a person should apply to a local automotive dealership. New employees are usually apprentices when they first get hired. Apprenticeships typically last three years. The apprenticeship program teaches students how to change oil, adjust brakes, replace tires, clean spark plugs, inspect engine compartments, and perform routine maintenance. Some students are able to perform more advanced repairs such as replacing shocks and installing air filters. Many schools offer classes during normal business hours. Some schools also offer evening classes, if necessary.

Once a student finishes his/her apprenticeship, it is possible to become a Journeyman. Journeymen typically spend four to five years learning how to install major systems, such as transmissions, differentials, steering gear, suspensions, and drive shafts. They also learn to perform complex repairs, such as remanufacturing engines, rebuilding transmissions, and troubleshooting electrical components. Because they have the experience and knowledge to do the job right, employers love hiring journeymen.

Candidates who pass the required exams are eligible for a license. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that there were nearly 1.7 million jobs available for automotive mechanics in 2010. That number was expected to grow by 18 percent from 2009 to 2020. Candidates who decide to open their own business should be prepared to invest thousands in equipment and supplies.

Many factors affect the automotive technician's salary, including location, education, experience, and employer type. On average, a jobless person could expect to earn $20,000 annually. Someone who has only a highschool diploma could earn around 21,000 dollars per year. Associate's degrees earn approximately $24,000 per annum. Technicians with a bachelor’s degree made about $27,000 annually. A master's degree earns around $32,000 per a year. Salaries are increasing so that a professional earning less than $30,000 could expect to make $40,000 in a few years.
